The Challenge

South Africa faces a significant challenge with teenage pregnancies, ranking among the highest globally. Statistics indicate that nearly one in four girls fall pregnant before the age of 20, with an estimated 150,000 girls aged 10-19 becoming pregnant in the 2022/2023 financial year.

Teen Pregnancy

The South African Department of Education warned that teenage pregnancy often perpetuates a cycle of poverty, particularly in households where there are no family support structures to care for children, thereby hindering young mothers from continuing their education.

Lack of Education

Social media platforms serve up very real, and often very dangerous ways for women to end their pregnancies. One of the most popular of the "non-existent medications" flogged online and through flyers plastered on street poles, are "sonar pills". Lured by the word sonar, women are  offered abortions.

Social Media

The World Health Organisation estimates that, globally, six out of 10 unintended pregnancies end in women choosing to have an abortion. Nearly half of all abortions are unsafe, with most of the unsafe terminations happening in developing countries like South Africa.
